Symposium on the Theory and Practice of Toponym Etymology
The long-term objective of the symposium is to establish the basis for a toponym-etymological dictionary built on the historical and contemporary toponymic corpus of the Carpathian Basin. The dictionary focuses on the toponymic data of the Middle Ages.
A toponym-etymological dictionary of a scholarly nature may be written most effectively if based on international cooperation; this, on the one hand, means the participation of researchers of languages used in the Carpathian Basin (Hungarian, German, Slovak, Romanian, Croatian, Serbian, etc.) as the toponymic elements of these languages are present in the region; on the other hand, such a work has wider international implications as well as it explores the problems, challenges, and opportunities of research in toponym-etymology in European languages.
The language of the symposium is English.
Organizer of the Symposium: Prof. Valéria Tóth (University of Debrecen, Hungary)
Papers presented at the symposium will be published in an independent volume of essays.
The symposium is sponsored by the project International Scientific Cooperation for Exploring the Toponymic Systems in the Carpathian Basin (ID: NRDI 128270, supported by National Research, Development and Innovation Fund, Hungary).
